The Theory Test
What is the Theory Test?
The theory test is designed to test your highway code knowledge and your hazard perception skills. You must pass your theory test before you take your practical one.
The Multiple Choice Section
Consisting of 50 questions, you have 57 minutes to take this section of the test. This sounds like hard work, but it's not anywherew near as bad as it would seem!
The test is taken at an approved testing centre and is fully computer based, utilising a touch screen to provide your answers.
Before you start the actual test you can have 15 minutes pratice to familiarise yourself with how the system works.
To pass the test you need to score 44 out of 50. You can go back to any questions you are not sure of at the end of the exam.
The Hazard Perception Section
The hazard perception section is not question based but provides a scenario in the form of a video where it is your task to spot the hazards.
There is a tutorial that you can view before you start, which you should follow carefully in order to score full marks.
A typical test will consist of 14 videos about 1 minute long. Most of the vidoes you will see are looking for you to spot one hazard, one video however will expect you to spot two.
The test is scored based upon how quickly you spot the hazard. An early spot gains the full 5 points for that hazard.
A hazard itslef is defined as anything that causes you to change speed or direction.
The pass mark for this section is 44 out of 75.
When to take the test
You must take your theory test before you take your practical one.
Whilst you can take your test at any point after receiving your provisional license, we would recommend that you join us for some lessons
first as this will greatly enhance your hazard perception.

Help!
Throughout your tuiton with Debut, your instuctor will be helping you to identify hazards so that it becomes second nature to you.
They will also offer help and guidance on the multiple choice section throughout the run-up to your actual test.
Additionally to the assistance from Debut, there are numerous resources available to help you through ytour test.
Nervous?
Take your test in the morning if you can. This will stop you dwelling on the test all day.
Skip the tea, coffee and coke, caffine does not help you concentrate and can raise anxiety levels.
Think positively - it really does help.
Most importantly though, the art of passing any test is in the preparation, so do not take the test before you are ready. Being fully prepared will give you extra confidence.
